In 2024, the project “Forests for Wetlands – Protection of Hydrogenic Habitats in Environmentally Valuable Areas” was launched, coordinated by the Coordination Centre of Environmental Projects and co-financed by the European Union under the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment 2021–2027 program. As part of the project, a call was announced for a social partner, which was won by the Wetlands Conservation Centre.
The goal of the project is to restore or maintain the condition and functions of bogs, peatlands, and other wetlands located on lands managed by the State Forests. As one of the project partners, the Wetlands Conservation Centre consults the planned conservation activities to ensure they align with the latest ecological and hydrological knowledge. Our experts review submitted documentation, conduct field visits, and prepare proposals for modifications when needed.
Project partners include forest districts from all 17 Regional Directorates of State Forests. These forest districts are responsible for selecting intervention sites, planning conservation measures, and implementing them.
In the next phase, the Wetlands Conservation Centre will also participate in monitoring the implementation of activities to ensure they are carried out according to project assumptions.
The conservation efforts focus on protecting habitats and species associated with wetland ecosystems, particularly Natura 2000 habitats, including:
1) bogs, peatlands, and other wetlands (7110, 7120, 7140, 7230),
2) meadows (6410, 6510),
3) forest habitats (91D0, 91E0, 91F0).
By mid-2029, the project aims to implement active conservation measures across more than 10,000 hectares of wetland habitats throughout Poland.
Additionally, the Wetlands Conservation Centre leads educational initiatives within the project, notably a series of field workshops and webinars for foresters under the name Hydro Academy.
The project is financed under the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment 2021–2027 program.
